What to Expect on Your First Acupuncture Visit

Your first visit lasts 60 to 90 minutes (follow up visits are 45 to 60 minutes long).  It includes a full health history and detailed discussion of your health concerns.  Part of this process is an examination of your tongue (protruded for your practitioner to view) and pulse evaluation.  After discussing your chief complaint and health history, I will craft the best acupuncture treatment for you that day.  Please do not brush your tongue coat on the day of your treatment.

During an acupuncture treatment, very fine, stainless steel, sterile, single-use needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points.  Typically 6-20 needles are inserted.  Needles are retained for approximately 20-30 minutes.  Needles are disposed of after each treatment (into a medical waste disposal container) and are never re-used.   Additionally, your treatment may include accessory techniques such as Tui Na massage, Gua Sha or vacuum cupping , or moxibustion.

Most people feel relaxed during an acupuncture treatment and many fall asleep.  Afterward, most people feel very relaxed.  At the end of your visit, I will provide a proposed course of treatment for your specific condition and schedule a follow up appointment.  Chinese herbs may be recommended, as well as lifestyle of dietary changes.

To expedite your first visit, please download the following forms and bring the completed forms to your first visit.  The health history form is for everyone, so all patients are asked to complete this and the Fertility History form is only for women seeking assistance with regulating their menstrual cycle or fertility enhancement.
