Chinese Medicine Tips for Summer

Summertime is the yang time of the year (as it gets hotter and lighter out) and it is good to remember that our health needs change with the seasons.

This summer take care to stay hydrated. Along with water, it is good to enjoy yummy summer fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors. Watermelon is especially good at hydrating and cooling the body and is useful on very hot, humid days. Apples, limes and lemon are cooling too, and adding a little lemon or lime juice to water can help quench thirst and improve hydration.

It is a good time to eat lightly cooked or steamed foods and less food in general. Heavy foods on hot, humid days can cause sluggishness and lethargy. Combat this with salads, sprouts, cucumber and cooling teas such as peppermint, chrysanthemum, and chamomile.

If you’d like to learn more about eating with the seasons and Chinese Medicine, please investigate Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford (source of the information above). This book is a fantastic resource on food as medicine.
