Gua Sha and Vacuum Cupping

These therapies are extremely useful for many disorders and are especially useful for pain relief.  Gua sha is the scraping of the skin with a smooth object (often a chinese soup spoon or specific gua sha tool) after the application of oil.  This technique is especially useful for relieving pain and may produce red marks on the skin, but the skin is not broken and does not bleed.  One of the most common places for gua sha is the neck and shoulders.  It is also very useful for persons experiencing chronic headaches or migraines.

Vacuum cupping is a similar treatment modality.  However, rather than scraping the skin, glass or plastic cups are suctioned to the skin.  This technique also relieves pain and is commonly used on the back.  As with gua sha, it may produce red marks which fade in 3-7 days.
